Learning the Portuguese Language

Portuguese is spoken by about 200 million people. The major Portuguese-speaking countries are Portugal and Brazil, but Portuguese is also spoken in Angola, Azores, Cape Verde, East Timor, Guinea-Bissau, Macao, Madeira, Mozambique and São Tomé e Príncipe.
There are significant differences between Brazilian Portuguese and the Portuguese spoken in Portugal. The sound systems are different: If you know Brazilian Portuguese it will be difficult for you to understand Continental Portuguese, and vice versa, however a native-speaker of European Portuguese can easily understand a speaker of Brazilian Portuguese, and vice-versa. This means that if you know one version of Portuguese, you will be understood by speakers of the other version.
It is a language related to Latin as are French, Italian, Catalan, Spanish, Romanian and Romansch.
