French is not written very phonetically. Many letters are written but have not been pronounced for hundreds of years. However, most words follow very simple rules, and those that don't can be learned through practice with a teacher, or by listening to tapes or CD's.

Bonjour à tout le monde !

By Gabriel F. Gargiulo

The book contains 231 French idioms and expressions that I heard on French lips.
The book is intended for someone who knows French already, and wants to talk more like a French person. Grammar is not explained, and of course, the pronunciation can not be shown in a printed book.

The format is simple.

It contains these and other words and expressions:

[Translator French book]
Harper Collins Beginner's French Dictionary (paid link)

By Harper Collins

Not just for beginners, as the title indicates. It is excellent because it shows you clearly the different meanings for the same word. For example, it describes clearly the different meanings of English "make out". It is not complete, so you won't find words like "rain check" or "mocking bird". It is out of print, but going for ridiculously low prices used and new at Amazon.com!
The book is probably intended for teenagers: it does have the French for "zit".
