Chinese is not written with letters like English. It is written with symbols, "ideograms" (drawings that represents ideas.)
The sound of a word does not tell you how to write the word.
It's a good idea to learn the 2,000 most common characters.
This will enable you to read a text, with a dictionary handy.
Chinese grammar does not have the mind benders found in most other languages - multiple verb tenses,
masculine, feminine and neuter. There are no case endings to challenge your memory.
