Language is that wonderful facility of human nature that lets us communicate our thoughts, feelings, fears,
pains, ideas, plans, experiences and intentions to another human who speaks the same language.
People who share the same language share a culture.
Their language is the means by which their culture is passed down from generation to generation.
When you learn a language you gradually enter into a new culture. You begin to share new experiences and thoughts.
You are becoming a member of a new cultural group. You are increasing the number of people with whom you have something in common.
You can talk and laugh with more people.
Learning a language implies accepting the culture that goes with it.
Here are the major reasons why people learn a second language:
To help advance in my career, or to find a new career.
To do my job better.
Because my husband, wife, boyfriend or girlfriend, or their family speaks the language and I want to understand them
and get along with them better.
Just because I love the language: it's beautiful and I love to hear it spoken.
Because it's my heritage. Speaking the language of my parents and grandparents will put me in touch with my roots and my background. Because I love the country where it's spoken. I love the culture. Speaking the language will help me know the culture better.
Because I plan to move to the country where it's spoken and want to get a head start on learning the language.
Because I know some of the language, am pretty good at it, and want to speak it like a native.
Because I am friends with some people who speak the language and want more friends who speak the language.
Because it is good for my mind. Knowing another language is a real accomplishment that I can be proud of.
